World Food Security Day: Our Commitment to a Healthy and Secure Future

World Food Security Day, celebrated every year on 7 June, is a crucial occasion to raise awareness of the importance of food security at global level. This day was officially proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2018, at the joint initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The aim is to promote actions at global, national and local levels to prevent, detect and manage food risks, thereby contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture and market access.

Why is World Food Safety Day celebrated?
Food safety is fundamental to people’s health and well-being. Safe food means food that is free of contaminants, bacteria, viruses, parasites or harmful chemicals that can cause illness and death. World Food Safety Day emphasises the importance of:

  1. Prevention of Foodborne Diseases: According to WHO, every year about 600 million people, or almost one in ten in the world, fall ill from contaminated food.
  2. Promotion of Safe Practices: The day encourages the adoption of preventive measures and good hygiene practices at all levels of the food chain, from production to distribution and consumption.
  3. Global Awareness: Raising awareness about the importance of strict food standards contributes to improving global health and reducing poverty.
